"Plush furnishings, leafy views and ritzy cocktails make this long-established favourite as suitable for dressy evenings out as for a lingering Sunday lunch or lazy weeknight. Locals routinely mistake Singapore Garden for a luxe Chinese takeaway, though the Singaporean and Malaysian section of the menu is well promoted and executed with verve. The additional list of seasonal specials tends to have a familiar ring from visit to visit, but rewards exploration.
Among our favourites are squid blachan (tender white squid chunks stir-fried with shrimp paste and glistening sugar snap peas), the oyster omelette (ho jien), and fried sa ho fun - ribbons of rice noodle served with a sauce of mixed meats, prawns and fish cake. Kueh pie tee (top-hat shaped cups stuffed with vegetables) makes a good starter, and don't forget to order a side of roti canai, wonderfully buttery flatbread served with creamy curry sauce.
Wine prices are quite high, but the four house choices are good enough for most occasions. Service from the bevy of elegantly costumed waitresses is warmly professional and practised. You may leave craving a similarly slick local, and Chiswick residents have it: Singapore Garden has a takeaway-and-delivery-only operation on the High Road."
